In The Sermon on the Mount, Jesus paints a vivid yet counterintuitive picture of what it looks like to be a part of the kingdom of God. It was not what anyone expected. God is doing what? He is inviting who? He is blessing them? I become a part of this how? Two thousand years later his message is every bit as shocking, freeing, beautiful and challenging to us as it was to its first hearers.
For those willing to dive in with us, we must warn you. This manifesto should be read with caution. As Dean Smith observed, it will either makes us better people or better liars. Many over the years have attempted to sanitize and change Jesus’ words, but this message cannot be tamed. To those willing to hear Jesus’ words as he spoke them, get ready. Because this changes everything.
